July 31, 1969. The 29th Chemical Detachment.

The 29th Chemical Detachment, under the operational control of the G2 Targets Division, remains one of the principal surveillance means available to the division. This quarter, 184 hours were flown on airborne personnel detector (Sniffer) missions, compared to only 87 hours during the previous quarter. This tremendous increase in APD missions was due to greatly increased support to OPCON units and the 18th ARVN Division. Although the number of hours flown on defoliation missions decreased from 69 during the previous quarter to 36 for this quarter, the overall flight time of the detachment increased over 40 percent. Note: I am extremely interested in anyone who can provide any background information concerning the the U.S.'s 29th Chemical Detachment. Thank you. Professor Charlie

  1. I can't help much with the later duties of the 29th Chemical Detachment (CBR Cen). I was a member of it from about March 1964 to July 1965, when I was transferred to the "Task Force Alpha" Chemical Section (Later called I Field Force Vietnam) I know that they arrived in Long Bing Vietnam around Feb 1966 and relocated to Tan Son Nhut Air Base where they were attached to HQ USARV for a while. The only info I have would be for their duties at Fort Hood, Texas. It was a 5 man detachment consisting of a CO, NCOIC, 2 CBR Specialists and Company Clerk
We were assigned to the 4th Army and attached to III Corps Chemical Section to give them a 24 hour per day capability. The two of us who lived on post were attached to Hq Co. III Corps for rations and billiting.
